"We're bringing very futuristic technology to the families that need it most first," says Brett Hagler, CEO and cofounder of New Story, a Silicon Valley-based non-profit that is working with Icon, the Austin-based construction tech company that developed the new machine.
The New story developed a new process to build house more efficiently, speedy construction and with low costs. They introduced 3D printing solution, the machine named "The Vulcan II". Austin-based construction technologies company ICON and non-profit New Story to build the world's first 3-D printed house.
The "Vulcan II" builds walls and floors by squirting layers of concrete, and can finish a house in a day or less...
Actually-Over the past year, in a lab in Austin, a team of engineers and materials scientists tested the design of the "Vulcan II," a massive, 33-by-11-foot machine that can 3D print the frame of a small house in less than a day. Later this year, it will begin printing a neighbourhood of more than 50 homes.
Designed specifically for Latin American farmers and palm-weavers living on less than 200 dollar a month. The homes will be printed this summer, with the first families slated to move in near the end of the year and early 2020. New Story believes that the homes could lift the families out of poverty and provide life-changing benefits for generations to come. ICON has developed a portable printer that will create durable and scalable homes out of local concrete. The device is engineered to work in remote areas that may lack access to water, power, and labour infrastructure. It is designed to be durable enough to be transported to remote locations and to be used outside, continuously, for months and even years. Each site-specific house will feature an outdoor kitchen and an expanded outdoor area for raising chickens and crops. The open-plan interior living areas are optimized for natural ventilation and flexibility. The 3D printer will allow for built-in elements ranging from countertops in the kitchen and bathroom to seating and shelving. The walls and structural elements for each home can be printed in just 24 hours with nearly zero waste.
A clever remedy to a worldwide problem thanks to technology: 3D printing.
