On Monday, The Sri Lanka government blocked several social media sites following rising tensions between the minority Muslims and majority Sinhalese in the wake of the Easter Sunday bombings which killed nearly 260 people.
Again Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Viber, Snapchat and Facebook Messenger have been blocked in Sri Lanka. This was third time to block social media after easter attacks. From sunday midnight, the blockade of social media has been imposed following the violent incidents between the minority Muslim and majority Sinhalese communities, officials said.
The temporary block of social media comes after the Police imposed overnight curfew in Chilaw, Kuliyapitiya, Bingiriya and Dummalasuriya yesterday following violence targeting Muslims.
"The curfew imposed in Kuliyapitya and Chilaw has been lifted", police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.
Temporary block was imposed for preventing rumours to spread. An area in Negombo faced similar attacks last week while several social media posts are in circulation calling for a boycott of Muslim businesses.
