Sharad Kumar appointed as interim Central Vigilance Commissioner
Jack Jun 12, 2019 07:55 ISTThe Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions said in a notification that the government has appointed Vigilance Commissioner Sharad Kumar as the interim central vigilance commissioner. Sharad Kumar will act as the interim Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) till the PM Narendra Modi-headed selection panel chooses a new incumbent.
Sharad Kumar is a former chief of the National Investigation Agency. He took over as the vigilance commissioner on June 12, 2018. His tenure will end in October 2020, when he completes 65 years of age.
The notification said, "The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection panel authorised Kumar to act as the Central Vigilance Commissioner, in the vacancy caused due to completion of the tenure of Shri KV Chowdary, Central Vigilance Commissioner, with effect from the 10th day of June 2019, until the appointment of the Central Vigilance Commissioner".
The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) consists of a Central Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners. A Committee is headed by the Prime Minister, comprising the Home Minister and the Leader of Opposition or a leader of single largest opposition party in Lok Sabha as members, select CVC and Vigilance Commissioners.
Central Vigilance Commissioner KV Chowdary and Vigilance Commissioner T. M. Bhasin completed their tenure at the anti-graft body on Sunday and Monday respectively.
