India's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki said it will stop making diesel cars from April next year, when new BS VI emission norms kick in. The reason: the steep cost of upgrading the engines, which will make the vehicles unviable for use. Maruti offers diesel variants for seven of its 14 models, and these cars comprise 23% of the companys volumes. To fill the void, the automaker will focus on CNG and hybrid vehicles. But Maruti isnot ruling out a reentry into diesels , it may consider developing a 1,500 cc BS VI-compliant engine if it sees demand.
