Madras High Court lifted its ban on Tik Tok
Jack Apr 25, 2019 11:20 ISTOn Wednesday, The Madras High Court lifted its ban on downloading the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok. It subject to a condition that pornographic videos would not be uploaded on it.
Three weeks ago, The Madras High court had imposed the temporary ban on downloading the Tik Tok app. Because, it was responsible for spreading pornography, potentially exposing children to sexual predators and adversely impacting users mental health.
Following the temporary ban of Madras High Court, Google and Apple removed the Tik Tok app from their app stores.
Against the ban, TikTok appealed to the Supreme Court where the Madras High Court was directed to rule on TikTok's appeal by April 24. By failing which the ban would cease to operate.
As per the orders of the Supreme Court, A bench of justices N Kirubakaran and SS Sundar, heard the matter, warned if any controversial video violating its condition was found uploaded using the app, it would be considered a contempt of court.
"TikTok will update their privacy protection norms according to the court's order and will address any complaint over content in three to 36 hours. If TikTok does not meet the conditions set by the court, contempt of court proceedings can be initiated against them", K. Neelamegam, a lawyer representing the petitioner said.
The TikTok's parent company Bytedance said in a statement, that the company's efforts to fight against misuse of the platform has been recognised. "The work is never done on our end. We are committed to continuously enhancing our safety features as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our users in India".
