BJP MP Om Birla unanimously elected as Speaker of 17th Lok Sabha

On wednesday, Om Birla was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. Om Birla took his oath at the parliament.
Two-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Om Birla from Kota constituency in Rajasthan is all set to take charge as the new Lok Sabha speaker. Om Birla was born on November 23, 1962. He studied M.Com from Govt. Commerce College, Kota. Birla started his journey in politics as a student leader. He was elected to the Rajasthan Assembly for three consecutive terms in 2003, 2008 and 2013.
His candidature as the Speaker was supported by all major parties including Congress, TMC, DMK and BJD.
The Opposition did not field any candidate for the Speaker's post and the motion moved by Prime Minister Modi to choose the Kota-Bundi MP as Speaker was adopted by a voice vote. He succeeds eight-term MP Sumitra Mahajan as the speaker.
Birla was declared elected as speaker by pro-tem Speaker Virendra Kumar. Prime Minister Modi addressed the House and heaped praises on Om Birla.
